Transgender powerlifter Mary Gregory has just been stripped of “his/her” championship titles, because “he/she” was simply not eligible to compete as a woman.
However the wider issue that should be finally addressed is how and why this issue of transgender athletes, is even an “ISSUE” in the first place.
The basic biological differences between a male and a female aren’t rocket science, and yet organizations like the RAW Powerlifting Federation willfully conflate and pretend the two obviously opposite genders are somehow magically transformed thanks to the miracle of science.
In fact, Mary Gregory is as much of a victim to “political correctness” as the genuine female powerlifters “he/she” has beaten.
Back in April Gregory set world records in the women’s squat, bench press, and dead-lift, and had earned a “Masters total world record” for powerlifting scores across the board.
At the time Gregory posted to Instagram; “What a day, 9 for 9! Masters World squat record, open world bench record, Masters World Record, and Masters World total record!”
No doubt Gregory actually believes he/she won and broke all those records, perhaps never giving a thought to the natural advantages of being born a male, and the natural genetics involved.
Gregory even sent the Federation a ‘THANK YOU” post for allowing him/her to compete, “A huge thank you to RAW Powerlifting Federation from the bottom of my heart! As a transgender lifter I was unsure what to expect going into this meet and everyone, all the spotters, loaders, referees, staff, meet director, all made me welcome and treated me as just another female lifter- thank you!” the athlete continued. “And thanks to all the fans in the audience who cheered me on and congratulated me!”
However by Friday, perhaps responding to the growing firestorm of female athletes protesting the results, “POLITICAL CORRECTNESS” finally took a bite out of both Gregory and the Raw Powerlifting Federation when the Federation decided to suddenly throw Gregory under the bus, and do a 360 degree about face, by stripping Gregory of all titles because the board does not consider Gregory a female, just yet.
“It was revealed that this female lifter was actually a male in the process of becoming a Transgender female,” Federation president Paul Bossi said in a statement to media. ““Our rules, and the basis of separating genders for competition, are based on physiological classification rather than identification.”
Adding, “On the basis of all information presented to the Board of Directors for this particular case,” Bossi continued, “the conclusion made, is that the correct physiological classification is male.”
The Federation added that because Gregory could not be officially classified as “female,” Gregory didn’t technically break any world records.
What seems apparent is that Federation president Paul Bossi is attempting to walk a fine line between the absurdities of his actions while attempting to be politically correct, while ignoring basic biological principles that exist between male and female.
Former British Olympian swimmer, Sharron Davies weighted in on the growing firestorm regarding biological males turned into quasi females stating on Twitter, “Any records set by trans woman (those born males with male biology & advantages) should be removed when all of this confusion & unfairness is sorted out.”
Adding, “This is a trans woman a male body with male physiology setting a world record & winning a woman’s event in America in powerlifting. A woman with female biology cannot compete. It’s a pointless unfair playing field.”
