It was a classic satirical smack-down by Republican Senator Ben Sasse, using lighthearted humor as veiled condemnation against obsessive anti-religious Democrats questioning the faith of Judicial Nominee, Peter Phipps.
On Wednesday during the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings, Sen. Sasse asked Judge Phillips if he knew the “point” of why Democrats were so concerned about his membership in the Knights of Columbus (KoC), a Catholic fraternal organization — and whether it has anything to do with his being nominated to serve on the Third Circuit Court of Appeals.
The 47-year old junior senator from the great state of Nebraska admitted to being puzzled regarding why such a question would be asked in a confirmation hearing.
“Judge, did you get questions for the record about being a member of the Knights of Columbus?” Sasse asked, “This is a new tradition around here evidently, trying to figure out if people are members of religious organizations.”
Phipps response, “Yes, associated with my district court nomination.” However, he acknowledged he does “not” know why Democrats would bring up this line of questioning.
Sasse described the Knights of Columbus as a harmless organization that organizes “community service…fish fries, and pool parties,” leading him to pose a more humorous inquiry.
“Are you now or have you ever been involved in the organization of a fish fry?”
The question, of course, was meant to be humorous. However, Democrat’s have been moving closer and closer into making one’s faith a litmus test for serving on the Circuit Court of Appeals.
A few years ago, another obsessed ant-religious Democrat San Francisco’s own Dianne Feinstein asked another Trump nominee Judge Amy Coney Barrett, quite pointedly, “Are you an orthodox Catholic?”
Barrett, who at the time was being nominated for the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, was visibly taken back by the insensitive and rude question. Feinstein had apparently read some of Barrett’s writings on abortion and the death penalty and was concerned regarding the judge’s views.
However, rather than being gracious and respectful of someone’s opposing views; Feinstein took a cheap shot proclaiming to the nominee, “The dogma lives loudly within you.”
Feinstein is the same sleazy senator who attempted to derail Justice Kavanaugh’s bid to the Supreme Court with an 11th-hour smear campaign by a woman alleging that the Supreme Court nominee attempted to rape her some 35-years ago. However, she couldn’t remember when or where the sexual assault took place, even those witnesses she claimed were present, disputed her testimony. In the end, Kavanaugh was exonerated, after being humiliated, harassed and slandered by unhinged progressives looking to ignore due process and the presumption of innocence.
The 85-year old lawmaker also attempted to derail the nomination to the Supreme Court of Neil Gorsuch during his confirmation hearings, by suggesting his faith cannot get in the way of “super-precedent” Roe v. Wade, even though Gorsuch repeatedly explained to Feinstein that the Constitution, not his personal opinions, is his guide in court.
As for Sen. Sasse’s poking a little fun at obsessive anti-religious Democrats, some were actually offended.
“To be clear, no senator on the Democratic side has ever suggested that a member of any organization is perceived unfit for the bench, only those who cannot be fair and impartial,” said Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI).
However just a few months back, Hirono told judicial nominee Brian Buescher she was worried about his relationship with the Knights of Columbus.
“The Knights of Columbus has taken a number of extreme positions,” Hirono said before asking the nominee to promise to “end” his membership with this organization “to avoid any appearance of bias.”
