“Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance”-George Barnard Shaw.
That satirical mixed-metaphor coined by Irish playwright and political activist, George Barnard Shaw perhaps best exemplifies the conflicted state-of-affairs America seems embroiled in, that even a symbol depicting the birth of our nation, is now regarded by historically ignorant organizations as being a “symbol for hate groups.”
This latest assault on our history comes from Major League Soccer, which has apparently declared America’s first flag commissioned by General George Washington on June 14th, 1777 as a symbol of hate during a soccer game at Sandy, Utah’s Rio Tinto Stadium.
The dust-up occurred when Randolf and Diana Scott, season ticket holders, came to the game on Sunday, to see their home team play wearing their team colors along with a replica of America’s first flag that symbolizes America’s struggle for freedom, from a far off British colony to a sovereign nation.
However, management apparently ignorant of the history behind America’s First Flag dubbed the “Betsy Ross Flag” took a page from NIKE and deemed the symbol of those 13 white stars in a circle depicting America’s 13 original colonies, purposely designed so that no one colony would stand out, as “symbolizing hate.”
Moreover, according to Randolf and Diana Scott, the league now claims that the flag has been adopted by “hate groups,” according to Fox News.
Randolf explained that his wife bought him the flag stating, “Diana bought it for me actually, because my other flag was kind of old and falling apart.”
What followed is something that seems to be a part of the new normal in America, where ill-informed and historically ignorant individuals attempting to be politically correct do stupid things, in this instance demanding that the couple hide the flag.
“They kept telling us if he wasn’t going to take it down, we were going to be ejected from the game,” Diana exclaimed.
“He (the attendant) asked me — he’s like, ‘So what’s the purpose of the flag?’” Randolf said of the stadium official. “I was like, ‘Well, ’cause we love America.’”
“When people see me or Diana with this flag, I hope they can understand that it’s about the freedoms we have here in America,” Randolf told Fox, “the legacy that America has.”
The league admitted to Fox that any “controversial” banner is banned from stadiums
Real Salt Lake Chief Business Officer Andy Carroll told Fox, “Recently, and very controversially as well as surprising to us, the Colonial flag has been adopted as a symbol for hate groups,”
Adding, “Any controversial flags or other similar banners or signs with symbols of hatred, divisiveness and/or intolerance whether intentional or otherwise will not be permitted in our stadiums. Period.”
Prior to the antics of former quarterback Colin Kaepernick, the “Betsy Ross Flag” was a positive proud symbol of America’s unity.
The absurd misinformation that somehow Betsy Ross had something to do with slavery is ridiculous; she was a fourth-generation Quaker American and an Abolitionist, Moreover Quakers helped ban slavery in England and were instrumental in the Underground Railroad, risking their lives transporting slaves to “free states.”
Moreover, the wider issue regarding historical ignorance in America is the reason why we have these kinds of issues. Whether it’s by accident or by design America is becoming a nation of misinformed and ignorant individuals…a country that doesn’t know its own history, begins to invent their own reality.
